Thuringia is initially associated with Goethe, Schiller and the children's channel, but despite the recently appearing creepy figures like Björn Höcke, it is probably not the right setting for a zombie apocalypse. The Weimar comic artist Olivia Vieweg, however, saw things a little differently and located her graphic novel “Endzeit”, which was published in 2012 - inspired by a train ride - in the no man's land between Jena and Weimar. A few years later, as part of a script workshop, she adapted her own story, originally only 76 pages long, and worked on it until a 280-page new version of the graphic novel was published in 2018. The award-winning material quickly found favor with a production company and has now been filmed entirely at original locations in Thuringia with a budget of around two million euros. The result is mixed: the genre mix of (adult) zombie horror and coming-of-age drama, conceived by director Carolina Hellsgård (“Wanja”) noticeably for a teenage target group, is original, but it seems half-baked and even that both of the main human characters remain strangely lifeless.
